Shawn Achor: The Science of Happiness and the Happiness Advantage

It's commonplace to think that if we can become successful, then we will be happy. Harvard lecturer and "positive psychology" researcher Shawn Achor says we have that backwards, that it's far more accurate to say that happiness precedes success.

The psychology of happiness is Shawn Achor's research specialty. Achor says that recent psychological and neurological research shows that our performance is measurably better at our work or other pursuits when we are happy than when we are even neutral, that we are more intelligent and we are more creative. And the good news is, we can in a matter of weeks retrain our brains to make ourselves happier and, consequently, more productive.

Achor lectures on the subject of positive psychology at Harvard, where his class on the topic is said to be the most popular offering on campus.

Latus Motors Gary Nixon Triumph Tribute Bike, Daytona 2012

Well, this is news from last year, I admit, but I just saw the Latus Motors (Gladstone, OR) Gary Nixon Triumph 675 roadracer tribute bike in the new edition of Cycle World magazine. Bike and rider Jason DiSalvo sported Nixon's old AMA plate number, 9, for the 2012 Daytona 200... DiSalvo's assigned AMA plate number is 40, but he was allowed to use plate number 9 for just this race, the season opener.

DiSalvo had a thrilling finish, making up a deficit of 26seconds over the course of 25 laps to take second place a bike length behind Joey Pascarella on the Project 1 Atlanta Yamaha R6. See the finish and hear DiSalvo reminisce about the race in the video embedded below.

DiSalvo was the winner of the 2011 Daytona 200 --- go here to see the video of the incredible, crazy finish of that race. Awesome.

The "Rockers vs. Mods" festival of bikes, scooters, and music is this coming weekend in Dallas, TX.

A tricked-out 1975 Yamaha RD350 cafe racer, built by Dylan Kilmer of Bellingham, WA, will be raffled off to benefit the Hunger Busters charity.
